Alpine Chalet

On first impression the land is too steep to build on, or at least at a reasonable price. However, the opportunity of uninterrupted 180-degree mountain views and a northern orientation that offers thermal gains during cooler months, sunrise, and sunsets every day, was too good not to explore.

With a garage and single bedroom unit on the ground level providing a podium, the upper level modest two-bedroom house is designed to be built entirely from timber, with very little intervention into the landscape, externally Shou Sugi Ban cladding with a batten framework encases an internal aesthetic of timber floors, vaulted plywood ceiling and ply lined walls.

With the garage and unit below providing space for a sunny and private elevated terrace and roof garden.  Together with a highly functional plan including internal access to the garage, the scheme offers exceptional passive comfort with minimal running costs and little maintenance. Add in flexible living arrangements and the possibility of an income or spill over space for guests, adult children etc, what appeared to be a difficult site becomes a unique opportunity!
