Residential Addition, Templestowe Lower

This project is one that adheres to restraint and celebration of the mid-century building it inhabits.

Constructed in the late 60s by Sibbel Builders, this home had until recently, accommodated the same family for over 50 years. The current owners were lucky to find it in near original condition, and other than painted roof beams and lining boards, it oozed the type of tactility and connection to landscape that MCM buildings offer.

The original owners had also endowed the home with an established garden, which true to the era, is deeply celebrated and enjoyed from the comfort of the home.

The renovation itself was commenced out of a need to increase accommodation, remove unnecessary pathways, and update the kitchen and bathrooms. It is deliberately modest in size and function, with a focus on a contemporary approach to historical references.

Aesthetically, a mixture of terrazzo floor tiles, walnut joinery and green ceramic mosaic tiles mix with the existing brick floors and painted white brick walls to reinforce a calmness as they are repeated through the home. An adherence to homogeneity in the bathrooms (a deep green hue) allows a tranquillity and spa like quality experienced in traditional bathing settings.

For the young family, the restoration is a reminder of when life was simpler, design was paramount and modesty in size allowed opportunity for increased build quality and larger landscaped areas.
